Training – Introduction

The Sydney Observation Course, a precursor to the ICAPP training, ran for more than 20 years, from 1984 to 2004.. It was originally established by Peter Blake, senior clinical psychologist, and Averil Earnshaw, child psychiatrist, after completing postgraduate trainings in London at the Tavistock Clinic. The Psychotherapy training programme has evolved over the years and is now offered via Zoom. This enables people from outside of Sydney and Australia to participate in the various seminars that are on offer. The training has also been restructured and is based on an ‘escalator’ model in which people build up a portfolio of units. This enables them to proceed to whatever level of the training they wish to complete. Please see the current 2018 programme for details of this model.

Admission Requirements
The courses are available to psychology graduates and experienced professionals from a variety of health and education disciplines who are interested in the application of psychodynamic thinking to a range of fields of human endeavour and intervention. Applicants require a 4-year degree in a relevant discipline from an approved tertiary institution.
