ICAPP Accredition Training Program 2027-2029
ICAPP is now accepting applications for the next intake of our 3 year Child and Adolescent Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Training Program, commencing in March 2027. Conducted online, this newly refreshed Training Program retains the core elements of our previous courses while incorporating contemporary and evolving theoretical thinking and clinical practice. The curriculum also reflects the significant developments and changes that have taken place within the field over recent decades.
The program is delivered online via Zoom in twice weekly 75 or 90 minute seminars.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must hold at least a 3 year tertiary degree and be proficient in English. Applicants must have a reliable computer with good internet access.
SELECTION
Admission to the ICAPP Training Program is based on a written application, followed by a comprehensive assessment of applications. Shortlisted applicants will then be invited to an interview conducted via Zoom, after which final selections will be made.

FORMAT OF STUDY
The 3 year Training Program consists of 12 units (4 units per year).
Online seminars are of 75 minute or 90 minutes duration twice a week (evenings to be determined) and run over two 12 week semesters each year.
Relevant clinical case work and observations for Infant Observation will be conducted face to face in students’ own countries / towns.
There is a 2 week break mid-semester and a 4 week break between semesters each year. There is a longer break between years (length of break to be determined). The exception to this format is Infant observation which runs over 30 weeks in the year.
Students must attend a minimum of 80% attendance in all seminars.
Seminars are not recorded.

TRAINING CURRICULUM
YEAR 1
PSYCHOTHERAPEUTIC UNDERSTANDING OF CHILDREN & ADOLESCENTS
This Foundation Year of studies explores the practice of observing infantile states of mind and psychoanalytic principles and practice are introduced. The skills and knowledge developed at this level are the basis of all future learning of psychodynamic psychotherapy with children and adolescents.
Units 1 to 4 must be successfully completed which includes satisfactory contribution to class discussions and timely submission of relevant essays. Progression to year 2 may still occur if Units 1 and 2 (Infant observation) are still in progress.
YEAR 2
PSYCHODYNAMIC CHILD AND ADOLESCENT PSYCHOTHERAPY
First Training Case will commence. Individual weekly supervision for each training case is required.
This year introduces the student more comprehensively to the practice of child and adolescent psychotherapy. Issues concerning techniques in the assessment and therapy of children and adolescents as well as working with parents and families will be presented.
Students will be required to commence or continue clinical work with children and/or adolescents. Students in level 2 are expected to be undertaking their own personal therapy twice a week with a fully accredited psychodynamic psychotherapist.
Units 5 to 8 must be successfully completed before advancement into year 3.This includes satisfactory contribution to class discussions and submission of relevant essays.
YEAR 3
CLINICAL TRAINING IN PSYCHODYNAMIC CHILD AND ADOLESCENT PSYCHOTHERAPY
Second Training Case will commence. Individual weekly supervision for each training case is required
Studies this year continue with clinical emphasis. Readings in contemporary literature on child and adolescent therapy will be examined, incorporating the different schools of psychodynamic thinking.
Clinical supervision and discussion both individually and in small groups will begin.
Students will be required to be continue clinical work with children and/or adolescents.
Units 9 to 12 must be successfully completed to progress to accreditation.
TRAINING CASES
Trainees are required to undertake and complete two supervised training cases.
One of the training cases is to be seen twice weekly for a minimum of 1 year, while the other training case is to be seen at least once a week for a minimum of 1 year. The child/adolescent will be then be seen for as long as the therapy is then needed.
Each training case is to be is to be chosen from one of the different age brackets (pre-school, latency, or adolescence). The first training case is to commence year 2, second early year 3.
A qualifying paper of 8000 – 12000 words will be presented to the ICAPP Committee for full accreditation no later than three months after the completion of both training cases.
